Ruby Celebrations in the Lakes

We were  invited along to the Lake District with Ben’s parents for a few days between Xmas and New Year and even luckier to be able to celebrate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary with them. They are a fantastic couple and I just hope we are as happy as they are after 40 years of marriage.

We stayed in the quieter village of Grasmere at the Red Lion Inn which had a cosy pub style atmosphere … very nice. There was still plenty of snow everywhere making all the pretty stone buildings and hills into a proper winter wonderland. Icy conditions didn’t keep us in however, each day we did two big walks over Loughrigg Fell  and down into Ambleside. These were supposed easy walks although proved quite challenging to a girl who had been stuffing her face for the past week. I really enjoyed them despite my unfitness, it felt like a mini arctic adventure.

I can’t believe I’m still talking about food but we had some great grub whilst there. I was very excited to eat at the Drunken Duck and the Glasshouse to celebrate their anniversary. The quality of the food in both was excellent and the atmosphere was very relaxed. They catered really well for my gluten-free diet, we even found a brilliant wee spot for lunch that was amazing for coeliacs, it needs a post of its own!

Ooo it was also my first trip across from Norn Ireland on the Stena Line ferry. Cool trip although my sea legs weren’t working and I felt quite green much to everyone’s amusement. We ended the trip with a good ole road trip back up to Edinburgh and a cosy night in watching the Dr Who Xmas special … ace!
