Edinburgh Botanics

Not the best weather for a trip to the RBGE but I’ve been dying to take Peter there and show him round. Unsurprisingly he wasn’t all that impressed and slept during most of the time there.

It was good to be back there, I can’t believe it’s been eight years since I was studying there. It was quite sad to see that a lot of the rhododendrons have had a lot of die back. Many of the evergreen & berried trees were looking fantastic but the autumn colour on the deciduous ones didn’t seem so good this year. At least I got to smell the wonderful candyfloss aroma from the fallen leaves of the Cercidiphyllum tree. One of the things that makes Autumn for me.  There wasn’t  a lot in flower, most notable were the ones below: dahlias, cymbidium orchids, ornamental ginger, gentians, anemones & nerines.

Had lunch in the terrace cafe and paid a stupid £7 for  a baked potato!! We should have just gone foraging for nuts and berries. Then took Ben to see the new(ish) visitors centre which is great.

They have this cool wall mural of a tree, even cooler is that you can have something engraved on the leaves. Great I thought, we’ll do that to celebrate the birth of our son. However after looking into it and discovering prices start at £1,000 for a bronze leaf and £5,000 for a gold one (OMG), we just took a photo of Peter by it and hope he’ll be happy with that!
